New Yorkers will discover the identity of their new city leader this election day, in a race that will determine who runs and protects the nation's most populous metropolis at a time when Donald Trump has threatened to deploy armed forces to the urban center.

In this context, New York has witnessed a mayoral election that has matched two distinctly opposing Democratic figures against one another. The contest has become an increasingly bitter face-off, marked by alleged racial bias and anti-Muslim sentiment, but it is the political differences between the two main candidates that could have significant consequences for how the party performs in next year's midterm elections.

The Progressive Challenger

In the progressive corner is the democratic socialist, the 34-year-old progressive candidate whose rapid ascent and grassroots campaign has attracted global notice. Representing the old guard is the former governor, the former New York governor now campaigning independently – and enjoying the support of wealthy contributors and big business.

As the election approaches, it is Mamdani, the one-time underdog who defeated Cuomo in the Democratic primary who is solidly positioned as the frontrunner. The candidate, who has campaigned on a platform of affordability and pledged to halt rent increases for about two million New Yorkers, has outpaced his rival by significant margins in every poll taken in October, and it is very much the progressive's election to throw away.

The Controversial Campaign

Yet, Cuomo, who stepped down as the state's leader in 2021 amid allegations of sexual harassment, has stated clearly he will fight to the finish, and not necessarily in an above-the-belt manner. He has trashed Mamdani's objectives as unachievable, and in recent days laughed as a radio host made anti-Muslim comments about Mamdani, who is Muslim. Recently, the independent was widely condemned as bigoted after sharing an AI-generated ad that included a series of racist stereotypes and showed Mamdani freeing a convicts.

It's been a particularly ugly end to an election that could be key to the path that the party, struggling in its reaction to Trump's authoritarian grabs, takes in the near future.

Broader Consequences

Should the progressive wins convincingly, the party establishment who have refused to endorse his bid will be compelled to address a platform that has resonated with Americans' anger at economic disparity, soaring price rises and the establishment. It would be difficult for the Senate leader and the House leader not to adopt at least some of Mamdani's ambitious ideas about affordability, given the newcomer has created an excitement within the party arguably not seen since the Vermont senator campaigned for the White House eight years ago.

Conversely, should Cuomo, who had been expected to sail to victory in the June primary, complete a surprising riches-to-rags-to-riches victory, it could cement national Democrats' current model of considered, uninspiring opposition – a strategy that has angered grassroots members. A New York defeat of the progressive's progressive, positive message could persuade Schumer and Jeffries that the best plan is to stick to the center – even as polls show the present version of the Democratic party is widely disliked across the country.

Voter Enthusiasm

Residents of the city seem to prefer the Mamdani vision. Polls show that his backers are much more excited about their candidate than his opponent's supporters, something that has been evident throughout the campaign. Mamdani's engaging content on social media, his optimistic vision for New York and his willingness to actually venture out and connect with voters in the city has drawn an army of over fifty thousand volunteers, many of them young or first-time voters.

A group of billionaire New Yorkers, including some who donated to the Republican in the 2024 election, have invested heavily into trying to get the independent into office, as other influential figures have urged Curtis Sliwa to withdraw from the contest.

Political Histories

For the Cuomo camp, and his billionaire supporters, are worried, it should not have reached to this point. When the assemblyman, one of 150 state legislators, started his mayoral bid in October 2024, not many had heard of him, and in reality, barely anyone even paid attention.

But his dedication to providing free buses and free childcare – along with the freeze-the-rent pledge – present a more positive vision of the city's direction than Cuomo’s dire warnings about “mayhem” and unfettered crime, and his vow to hire more police officers.

Recent Challenges

Nevertheless, Mamdani has faced difficulties in recent days, after video emerged suggesting him suggesting the New York police department and the Israel Defense Forces were connected.

“We have to make clear that when the boot of the NYPD is on your neck, it’s been laced by the Israeli military,” Mamdani said in the recording, recorded at a Democratic Socialists of America convention in 2023.
