US Pledges a Substantial Assistance Contribution, Issuing a Direct Warning to United Nations.
With an announcement that pairs generosity with stringent conditions, the United States has pledged $2 billion for UN emergency relief programmes. However, this funding was accompanied by a stark admonition for the global organization: it must "adapt or die."
A Significant Pledge Amid Wider Budget Reductions
This commitment came during a time of significant cuts in US funding for global aid. Further cuts are also anticipated from other key donors such as Britain and Germany. The US representative, President Trump's Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, made the statement alongside the UN's top humanitarian official.
"This contribution will be crucial for saving countless lives," stated the UN's humanitarian chief. However, this sum is just a small portion of the United States' traditional spending, which were estimated at approximately $17 billion in the recent past.
Funding with Strings Attached
This new US funding comes with unconditional. It prioritizes just 17 nations, such as Syria, Sudan, and Haiti. Significantly, Afghanistan and Yemen are explicitly excluded.
The representative justified this by citing concerns that there, UN funds had been funneled to militant groups. "President Trump will never tolerate any amount of taxpayers' money supporting organizations designated as terrorists," he asserted.
