Democracy thrives as Black Americans progress. The evidence is clear: citizenship by birth, constitutional due process, equal opportunity legislation from education to housing to employment and equitable small business investments all stem from institutional reforms currently called DEI. Yet, recently, DEI has been used as a diversion by cynical politicians and activists to reverse advancements and strengthen control.

The Concrete Impact of These Current Strategies

The impact of these approaches is substantial and unquestionable. Beginning this year, research has found showing over three hundred thousand African American women have lost their jobs while $3.4 billion in grant programs supporting African American neighborhoods has been eliminated – comprising $9.4 million in sickle cell disease research, $42m for initiatives aimed at reducing maternal death rates in Black communities and $31 million in reductions to address asthma rates and environmental contaminants affecting Black children.

Historical Context and Broader Implications

Coordinated efforts to suppress the progress of Black communities isn't novel; however, history has proven that whenever advancements for African Americans are removed, all communities face negative consequences. In the Reconstruction era, African Americans made extraordinary strides – serving in government, establishing enterprises and creating educational institutions. Less discussed is how additional marginalized groups, including poor white farmers to Latino gauchos, similarly gained from expanded opportunities to legal and economic systems.

Distortion is among the most deceptive strategies. It reshapes reality in ways that narrow our expectations and institutionalizes prejudice as policy.

As African Americans encountered decades of segregation laws and state-sanctioned discrimination, additional populations saw a similar retreat regarding their entry to complete civic participation. As the equality movement worked to remove the remnants of segregation, its methods of peaceful protest increased liberty and access not only for African Americans, but for communities from every demographic. From the Native American movement to progress in LGBTQ+ rights to female financial independence, Black civil rights opened the aperture for greater civil liberties.

Current Challenges with Intentional Efforts

However, every time African American neighborhoods make progress, forces threatened by change attempt to reverse advancements. As we face the current regime, DEI serves as the defense that guarantees a pluralistic democracy. Its power is rooted not in politics, but in the promise of America itself: that all people are created equal and deserve a chance to succeed.

It's essential to recognize these assaults as part of an intentional strategy. The goal is to rewrite our nation's story and restrict the prospects for African Americans, and by extension, every citizen considered inferior. It's easy to perceive these measures separately, but this is intentional.

Academic and Financial Impacts

Educational funding and academic initiatives face elimination, causing African American scholars with fewer chances to pursue a quality education. These cuts also affect Native American students and functioned as a basis for attacks on Latino scholars. African American households continue to live in areas having poorly funded education due to historical patterns of segregation and inequality, and the concomitant effect of cutting programs unequally affects every disadvantaged youth and disabled people.

Funding for Black-owned businesses and vital health initiatives have been slashed, causing the country lacking the information needed to confront institutional inequalities in our economy and healthcare system. The follow-on effect will weaken studies and funding for women across racial categories. Through altering who matters, who is appreciated and which narratives are shared, these policies intensify the obstacles that populations have struggled for generations to overcome.

Erasure and Suppression in Tandem

Removal and censorship operate together, and those implementing them typically begin with Black America. Individuals attempting to cripple democracy have eliminated African American narratives from educational materials, displays and collective consciousness, costing us the insights of confrontation, correction and restoration. Rising autocracies understand how to influence schools, universities, businesses and public agencies into silence.

The Path Forward and Shared Duty

The challenge before us now involves: what will we do in response? Should we permit anxiety, misinformation and autocracy to determine the future? Or will we act, determinedly and intentionally, to protect reality, honor Black progress and safeguard the right to opportunity for all citizens? The response will shape not just this moment, but the very future of the nation.

Safeguarding and preserving the historic progress achieved is a moral imperative, one that demands coordinated public engagement. Like the fight for freedom has taught us, when we struggle for freedom, we win. We absolutely face coordinated attacks on truth, which are intended to create hopelessness or cause paralysis – but we cannot allow that.

Our nation's future won't come on its own. Its success or failure will depend by what we choose to do and resist now.

America's story started with the principle that from diversity, we could become one. E pluribus unum is the essence of DEI, the actual experience for African Americans and the evidence that we can build something greater beyond anxiety and hopelessness. Collectively, we can maintain opportunity, honor truth and reinforce our democracy for future eras.
