The Journey of a Cult can be marked by specific steps.

1. The Core Concept

A charismatic leader or coaches introduce a new and transcendent idea pledging a solution for struggling players.

Thus we find ourselves. They’re getting ready to storm the compound overseas. Pressure is mounting. Signs of trouble appear from the sidelines. An isolated player, vulnerable, nervous, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT displayed prominently as a symbol, has stumbled into view and is taken aside in secrecy to a different team in county cricket.

Do you recall the early days, when optimism reigned? The days of Bazball 1.0, of Bazball without brains.

2. Love-Bombing

Movement founders promise a reboot, a brighter tomorrow, love, redemption together with shared faith in the method.

What was this thing at first? Players celebrating enjoying success. Tattoos. Strength. Focus. Confident masculinity. Of course, The squad insist they don’t use the label, amusingly since it’s not recognized, what exactly did I just watch?

Yet it’s clear the concept. It’s the player executing a stroke so outrageous it’s beyond belief. It’s the excitement of the captain at his peak, an expression conveying: pensive Nordic god, strong features, untamed style, truly contemporary you almost imagine to look down and notice he’s fielding on the ground stripped to the waist and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s the opener continuing to have permission speaking publicly, appearing as a joyful figure smartly dressed, saying stuff like we are actively deconstructing the orange. And yes, the vibe, for a significant period, was entirely positive.

3. A New Life

Development stage. Cohesion maintained by rote learning of mantras. These ideas may seem irrational as a loyalty check.

Is it just me? The reaction, the outrage, the disappointment post-defeat appears excessive, overdone. The performance was poor during the match, as history shows. They were savaged defensively for a couple of hours when tactics failed, outplayed by Travis Head playing aggressively but smarter, adjusting to the pitch, a man playing with a kind of light around him.

Now there is the attacks, the anger, the perception of the team as a kind of abomination. The opinion suggests that losing isn’t enough, they must be humbled, to be scoured, obliterated, defeated by the vengeful purity of the pace attack, the simple basics of the veteran, seen enjoying successes modestly similar to getting a rewarding prize. What will this do to them?

4. Hate Bonding

Challenges surface from failures in the plan. But the cult cannot admit errors. It turns to hostility externally.

In truth, half a week out the upcoming game, we’ve entered a delicious point of tension in the lifespan of this movement. They might succeed in Brisbane with bold tactics. Alternatively, defeat could come swiftly. In case of defeat it feels like we could be witnessing the final stage.

It’s the imperial sport of England, the pioneering brand. And guess what, Britain is itself a cult, a system of unknown levels, a monarchy still exists.

The team have been sealed up in this system since childhood. In trying to escape from it, to build a better atmosphere, they are simply replicating their past, forming a new circle, a closed circle, but now with a new team and a leader promoting authenticity provided you conform.

Live where your feet are. Embrace challenges. Despite efforts, you remain stuck.
