The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
