This fondness for informal dialogues appears within his fictional works the novel Trespasses (from 1970) and Peter Smart’s Confessions (dating to 1977). The two present a central male figure besieged by funny, annoying, over-the-top characters, often close relatives whose gravitational pull is unavoidable. “Who wants to be normal anyway?” queries Ralph’s mother within Trespasses when he reveals he is gay. The Ones to Make You Laugh and Cry
The novelist penned brilliantly about aging, early and late in his career. His debut novel At the Jerusalem (from 1967) traces the life of Faith Gadny as she adjusts to a care facility, where other occupants provide kindness missing from caregivers, whose concern via queries “Why aren’t you ladies watching the television?”. In the novel before his final Chapman’s Odyssey (released in 2011), a senior in hospital alternates between disputing with medics (“I consume only fine wines”, he insists after reprimands over liver tests) and experiencing a rush of recollections involving his mum, partners, classic characters such as Pip from Dickens or Emma from Austen. Each volume contain funny exchanges yet shadowed by the inevitable conclusion. Throughout his novels, grins are unreliable. Within At the Jerusalem, “the matron grinned, then ended it abruptly”; The character giggles with unease when confronted about her behavior. Within Chapman’s Odyssey, Harry advises that “my laughter is not genuine”. Your laughter, nonetheless, is sincere.
If You Want the Facts Behind the Fiction
Apart from his stories, Bailey was a talented life writer, issuing two personal accounts. An Immaculate Mistake (from 1990) serves as a classic of reminiscence, its title derived from his parent’s remark labeling him an “accident” and questioning his presence. (“Elderly, she disclosed hidden truths,” he notes. “This one, she knew, would be of particular interest to me.”) This book reveals the origins of misguided, loving, frustrating parents throughout his books. It also paints an evocative portrait of a boy discovering his sexuality during the mid-20th century, when same-sex acts were criminal, and his family found it odd for a boy to buy his mother flowers; and of an aspiring actor (Bailey acted before writing) who learned Hamlet by age fifteen. His subsequent life story A Dog’s Life (2004) concentrates on days with his pet Circe, his former partner David, his love for Romania—that influenced subsequent books such as Kitty and Virgil, the title Uncle Rudolf, and the book The Prince’s Boy—and plenty of gossip, with a story about Iris Murdoch labeling a listener an “idiot”.
For Those Short on Time
The author’s fiction tend to be short—the notable Old Soldiers (from 1980) is barely 100 pages—yet for an even briefer option, try his poetry from later years. The two books Inheritance (published in 2019) and also Joie de Vivre (from 2022) display his humor, compassion, accuracy in brief format. These poems contain endings and beginnings. Two affectionate topics reappear: regarding his mum (“I’m closer to you now – / I need to tell you – / than I ever was in life”) and for his partner Jeremy Trevathan. In Amazement, he describes the happiness from “watching an idiotic TV entertainment” together, ending with: “It’s remarkable, this simple act of consuming cheese and wine as darkness falls.”
For a Single Must-Read
Most agree that Bailey’s most ambitious novel is Gabriel’s Lament, a Booker Prize finalist in 1986. (He also judged the prize in 1982, an experience he despised.) This was the book Bailey felt proudest of, even though “it consumed all his energy”. It follows Gabriel Harvey’s story, with a missing mother while his dad transforms into a intolerable pretentious person following a financial windfall, and the events may link. It serves as a portrait of 20th-century London, a tale of emotional unraveling, and as funny and sad as anything Bailey wrote. To continue, it led to a follow-up, Sugar Cane (from 1993), which the author studied by going to such places to watch.
