A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
